SIGCHI Executive Committee Roles and Responsibilities

Summary. This is the second in a series of posts about the SIGCHI Election. It gives an overview of the Executive Committee elected positions. The first post in the series is here, and the third is here.

SIGCHI is run by the Executive Committee (EC), which includes elected officers, appointed officers, and the Past President. The ACM structure and function of a typical SIG provides general details with respect to this committee.

The Executive Committee develops policies and takes actions to ensure the success of all of the SIGCHI conferences. They also set the vision and advocate for the field of HCI as a whole (e.g., promoting involvement in HCI in new regions and new communities, broadening participation in HCI and SIGCHI activities, advancing HCI education).

The Executive Committee has five elected positions. For a full description of each position, refer to the SIGCHI bylaws. Below is a summary of key responsibilities:

President. The President is responsible for leading SIGCHI and managing its activities. The duties of the President include:

  • Appointing committee members, filling vacancies, and appointing adjunct chairs
  • Representing SIGCHI in ACM meetings and externally
  • Calling and presiding at SIGCHI Business Meetings
  • Submitting SIGCHI’s annual report of activities to ACM

Executive Vice-President. The duties of the Executive Vice-President include:

  • Assisting the President in leading and managing SIGCHI
  • Carrying out such duties as are delegated by the President
  • Assuming the office of President, should that office become vacant

Vice-President of Membership and Communications. The duties of the Vice-President for Membership and Communications include:

  • Keeping and distributing minutes of meetings
  • Maintaining communication with SIGCHI’s membership
  • Overseeing membership benefits and services
  • Overseeing SIGCHI’s volunteer development program

Vice-President of Finance. The duties of the Vice-President for Finance include:

  • Preparing SIGCHI’s annual budget
  • Preparing an annual report on SIGCHI finances for the membership
  • Assisting in the review of financial plans of SIGCHI conferences and chapters

Vice-President at Large. There are two Vice-Presidents at Large. The duties of the Vice-Presidents At Large shall be decided by the Executive Committee. These duties are expected to change in response to issues facing SIGCHI.

The Executive Committee also has four appointed officers: the Vice-President for Publications, the Vice-President for Conferences, the Vice President for Chapters, and the Vice-President for Operations.

Typical Time Commitment

Serving on the Executive Committee is a significant time commitment. We estimate that it will take about 5 hours per week on average, and on a regular basis. This is not including monthly EC teleconferences that last 1–2 hours, and quarterly in-person (travel-permitting) EC meetings that typically last 2.5 days. Officers also often manage special initiatives, which sometimes include constituting a sub-committee to help them in their duties; these initiatives obviously require more time.
