Abstract: Today, the nature of human-computer interaction is changing what it means to experience computing. Every object or experience in life can be enhanced with computational support to provide enhanced experiences or communication opportunities. The very fabric of life is being rewritten with every new object created, an environment built or refurbished, and home or office upgraded.

In addition, the range of human senses involved in human-computer interaction has moved beyond simply the visual and audio. Human capabilities have yet to be fully employed when providing input to a computer. It is even more certainly the case that the plethora of human senses has not been exploited when computers are providing output for us. As a result, today when we think about display technology we need to step back and take a wider and more inclusive view of how computer systems present information for humans to perceive. The pixel is not always the point. Indeed the pixel can often get in the way of thinking about effective mechanisms to present information.

In this event, a series of speakers will reflect on their own experiences and research in the display of information for effective understanding. Some of the presenters are well known to the graphics community, however, others are sitting on adjoining fields more focused on human-computer interaction while other speakers come from outside either sphere of influence and to challenge our collective notion of what it means to effectively display information for human consumption.

Dr. Hrvoje Benko
Dr. Hrvoje Benko is a Director of Research Science at Facebook Reality Labs Research, working on novel interactions, devices and interfaces for Augmented and Virtual Reality applications.

Dr. Anne Roudaut
Dr. Anne Roudaut is a Reader (Associate Professor) in Computer Science and head of the Bristol Interaction Group at the University of Bristol (UK).

Associate Professor Martin Tomitsch
Associate Professor Martin Tomitsch is Head of Design and Director of Innovation at the University of Sydney. He leads the Urban Interfaces Lab at the School of Architecture, Design and Planning.

Mark Pesce
Mark Pesce is a professional futurist and public speaker. He invented the technology for 3D on the Web, served as a judge on the ABC’s “The New Inventors”, founded postgraduate programs at USC and AFTRS, is a multiple-award-winning columnist for The Register and IEEE Spectrum.

Panel Chair:
Prof. Aaron Quigley
Prof. Aaron Quigley is Head of School for UNSW’s School of Computer Science and Engineering in Sydney Australia and a general co-chair for the ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in Yokohama Japan in 2021. His research interests include discreet computing, global HCI, pervasive and ubiquitous computing and information visualisation.
