This workshop was funded by SIGCHI and held during the Brazilian Symposium on Collaborative System and the Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computer Systems from November 3rd to 5th. - CSCW 2016 Telepresence Report
The telepresence program was effective and highly usable for many remote attendees. Beams were also used opportunistically to support other functions at the conference, e.g., panel discussants. Through our explorations, we also learned about some important challenges that should be addressed in future telepresence programs. - ICMI student travel and keynotes 2015
“To fund international student speakers and keynote speakers to attend the conference”. The proposal for support for 2015 came in as SIGCHI was moving from the old model to this new “Conference Development fund”. The proposal and report and included here for full transparency but shouldn’t be seen as models for others. - IUI 2016 Student Consortium
The IUI 2016 Student Consortium is similar to the Doctoral Consortium typical to many conferences, but open to students working towards postgraduate degrees at any level. This proposal was approved by the SIGCHI core CMC. - CHI PLAY at 2015 SIGCHI CMC
Report on CHI PLAY representation at the SIGCHI CMC meeting in San Jose 2015. CHI PLAY is a young conference that started in 2014. We have already been successful in creating a vibrant and growing community (150 attendees in 2014, 180+ attendees in 2015). The steering committee are committed to making it a long term success. We therefore viewed attendance at the CMC meeting in San Jose in Dec 2015 as an important opportunity for us to learn more about SIGCHI and the other subconferences. Funding was requested from the Conference Development Fund to support attendance at the meeting. - ETRA 2016 Tutorials
ETRA is the largest eye-tracking conference in the USA and focuses on all aspects of eye movement research across a wide range of disciplines. The goal of ETRA is to bring together computer scientists, engineers and behavioral scientists in support of a common vision of moving eye tracking research and its application forward. This is the final report on the three tutorials on (Eye-tracking and Visualization, Mining Scanpath Sequences with R and TraMineR Packages: A Hands-On Introduction and Eye data quality: measuring, calculating, and reporting) given at the Eye Tracking Research and Applications conference in 2016 attended by 37 participants. - Ubicomp / ISWC 2016 – Development Fund Report
Diversity and inclusiveness are key concerns of UBICOMP/ISWC , for example the conference alternates each year between Asia, Europe and North America. As a key aspect of long term strategy the conference strive to continuously broaden and diversify its base by targeting and supporting young researchers and students from various countries and backgrounds. In the end, using reduced SIGCHI funding thanks to corporate support and some NSF funding the proposers were able to support International Student Volunteers and the Doctoral Colloquium with this SIGCHI award. - MobileHCI 2016: Student Support and “Future of MobileHCI Panel”
2016 ACM International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction with Mobile Devices and Services. This grant was to fund international student to attend the conference (doctoral consortium) and cover possible expenses of the panelists on Mobile Interaction, Computing and Life. - IUI 2017 Student Travelling Grants Support and the “Most Influential IUI paper” session In 2017 we held the ACM 22nd annual meeting of the intelligent user interfaces community. The purpose of this award was to encourage and support the participation of international students (especially female and minority students and students from low income countries) to attend the conference (the main conference, doctoral consortium and workshops) and partially cover travelling expenses of the authors of the most influential IUI paper.
- Report on the ACM Summer School on Recommender Systems 2017 at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy
The ACM Summer School on Recommender Systems (funded by SIGCHI and supported by the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano) was held as a pre-program to the RecSys’17 conference from Monday 21st of August to Friday 25th in Bolzano, Italy. 15 leaders in the field gave tutorials and hands-on lessons. The lectures were covering a broad range of topics from an algorithmic as well as a methodological perspective. In addition, upcoming and trending topics such as recommending to groups or affect and personality-based recommendation approaches were addressed. - Student support for UMAP 2017
The SIGCHI Conference Development Funds awarded to UMAP 2017 were used to support international students with insufficient funds to attend the conference. All applications were subject to a review process, requiring a recommendation letter from the supervisor and/or the department, an accepted paper, and documentation of financial resources and needs. In total (with other funds) UMAP 2017 student support was granted to 39 international students (34 Phd, 5 Master students). - Demo reception at ISS 2017 development Fund Report
One of the driving objectives of ISS 2017 was to encourage authors to showcase their work in a live demo and poster event. The SIGCHI development fund was used to provide students with support to demo their projects at ISS 2017. The event included over 25 demos and a further 18 posters. We used the SIGCHI funds to provide financial support to students who are travelling from afar to bring their demos to the conference. And for creating a specialised demo reception event that incentivises participation in demos and creates a record of the event in social media channels. - 2017 UbiComp funding Improving the Diversity and Accessibility, Remote Attendance and an Editorial Board Meeting
This was a three part request of $30,000 for (i) Improving the Diversity and Accessibility of UBICOMP 2017 to Broaden Participation, and (ii) Supporting the Remote Attendance of UBICOMP 2017 via Telepresence Robots and (iii) Supporting the IMWUT Publication Cost and the Editorial Board Meeting at UBICOMP 2017. The SIGCHI conferences board $9700 for (i) and $15400 for (ii) and $4900 for (iii). The organisers used $3323 for (i), 4939.20 for (ii) and $4900 for (iii). $13,162 in total. - 2017 ACM International Conference on Multimodal Interaction (ICMI)
This project and funding was relevant to the graduate students who were accepted into the ICMI 2017 Doctoral Consortium (and therefore qualified for a travel award). The availability of the travel award helped encourage attendance by the students at the whole conference. The ICMI community benefited from this funding because it ensured that our top students were able to participate in the international meeting, regardless of their home institution’s funding situation. - VRST 2017 student travel report
