With its mission to develop the field of HCI, the SIGCHI Executive Committee has had a “Development Fund” to provide resources to alleviate some of the constraints that can stifle the exchange of ideas across our diverse community and around the world.
In 2017 SIGCHI supported a development fund award to support CSCW research in Latin America which has been active for more than 20 years, albeit largely disconnected from the broader international CSCW. Holding CSCW 2017 in Latin America would have been an opportunity to acknowledge this history and to allow the larger CSCW community at large to learn from CSCW Latin America and for researchers from the region to be better integrated into the international CSCW community. However, a change of venue was necessary. An activity was proposed instead with the aim of integrating existing Latin American CSCW research groups into the larger SIGCHI community. As such, funding was requested for an International School.
In 2019, SIGCHI is pleased to announce that it is supporting members of the CSCW community who are organising the “First International Summer School in Research Methods for HCI / CSCW” the Application Deadline for this upcoming event is January 11, 2019 (4:00 pm PDT). The main goal of this summer school (March 24 – 29, 2019 | Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil) is to provide new researchers with a systematic overview of the research methods that are used in both HCI and CSCW. The school will also enable more experienced researchers to refine their skills in the research methods used in HCI / CSCW.
