SIGCHI is run by the Executive Committee (EC), which includes elected officers, appointed office-holders, and the President of the most recent EC. The ACM structure and function of a typical SIG provides general details with respect to this committee.
The Executive Committee develops policies and takes actions to ensure the success of all of the SIGCHI conferences. They also set the vision and advocate for the entire domain of HCI (e.g., promoting involvement in HCI in new regions, better HCI education.)
The Executive Committee has five elected positions. For a full description of each position, refer to the SIGCHI bylaws. Below is a summary of key responsibilities:
President: The President is responsible for leading SIGCHI and managing its activities. The duties of the President include:
- Appointing committee members, filling vacancies, and appointing adjunct chairs
- Representing SIGCHI in ACM meetings and externally
- Calling and presiding at SIGCHI Business Meetings
- Submitting SIGCHI’s annual report of activities to ACM
Executive Vice-President:
The duties of the Executive Vice-President include:
- Assisting the President in leading and managing SIGCHI
- Carrying out such duties as are delegated by the President
- Assuming the office of President, should that office become vacant
VP of Membership and Communications:
The duties of the Vice-President for Membership and Communications include:
- Keeping and distributing minutes of meetings
- Maintaining communication with SIGCHI’s membership
- Overseeing membership benefits and services
- Overseeing SIGCHI’s volunteer development program
VP of Finance:
The duties of the Vice-President for Finance include:
- Preparing SIGCHI’s annual budget
- Preparing an annual report on SIGCHI finances for the membership
- Assisting in the review of financial plans of SIGCHI conferences and chapters
VP at Large (Two per EC): The duties of the two Vice-Presidents At Large shall be decided by the Executive Committee. These duties are expected to change in response to issues facing SIGCHI.
In addition, the Executive Committee (whose current roster is kept up to date) has four appointed roles: the Vice-President for Publications, the Vice-President for Conferences, the Vice President for Chapters, and the Vice-President for Operations.
