SUMMARY:Axel Niklasson - The Centre for Human-Computer Interaction Design
DESCRIPTION:Team-based tools and artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly affect work and workers. Gartner Group has predicted that by 2023\, fewer than one-third of digital workers will select the corporate office as their preferred place to work. In the resulting remote and hybrid work scenarios\, technologies such as Microsoft Teams\, Google Workplace and Slack are growing in influence while AI interventions endeavour to improve both work and workers. \nIn this talk I am going to cover part of my PhD research\, an ethnographic study of a software development team and their work around and through the team-based tool Slack. Drawing on my empirical findings I will discuss how teamwork is framed in recent AI interventions and how an alternative framing might promote a deeper engagement with the site of team-based tools. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nbio\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAxel Niklasson is a PhD student at the Centre for Human-Computer Interaction Design\, City\, University of London. His current research centres on the introduction of AI in team collaboration. Previous to his academic work Axel enjoyed a 20-year international career in telecom\, media and software engineering. He earned his MSc from Lund University\, Sweden.

SUMMARY:Dr Andrew MacFarlane - Search Strategy Formulation for Systematic Reviews: a review of issues\, challenges and opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Systematic literature reviews play a vital role in identifying the best available evidence for clinicians and healthcare policymakers. The resources required to produce systematic reviews can be significant\, and a key to the success of any review is the search strategy used to identify relevant literature. However\, the methods used to construct search strategies can be complex\, time-consuming\, resource-intensive and error-prone. In this review\, we examine the state of the art in resolving complex structured information needs\, focusing primarily on the healthcare context. We identify key challenges\, issues and gaps exploring appropriate solutions and workarounds. We conclude by proposing a way forward to facilitate trust and transparency and to aid explainability\, reproducibility and replicability through a set of key design principles for the development of search strategies in systematic literature reviews. \nBIO Dr Andrew MacFarlane is a Reader in Information Retrieval at City\, University of London. He is a member of both the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Information and Library Science at that institution. His research interests in information retrieval or search technologies are wide ranging from the technical side of computing (search algorithms) to information science (meta-data for search) and HCI (accessible information retrieval systems). This work sits within the Centre for HCI Design at City. He has developed a particular interest over the years in professional search in various environments such as journalism and advertising and has been an investigator on a number of different projects investigating key issues in this field. He is also involved in bridging research and teaching\, having run an information retrieval module for nearly 20 years. The cohort includes information science\, information systems and data science students\, many of whom go on to become professional searchers. He is therefore well acquainted with the challenges professional searchers face\, and has actively been involved in pedagogical research to help early stage professional searchers to gain essential knowledge for their careers. \nRSVP: https://twitter.com/cityuni_hcid

SUMMARY:Dr Alex Taylor - The Capacities for Interaction - HCID Online Seminar
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I want to show how an AI-based device — designed to support people with vision impairments — is being used by a young boy\, TH. Working closely with TH and his family\, the device has been built by colleagues at Microsoft Research in Cambridge as part of Project Tokyo. It uses the Hololens platform and a combination of computer vision techniques and AI-generated models to present the names and relative spatial locations of nearby people to the user. By stepping through a small number of cases in which TH uses the device\, my aim is to show that what I call the capacities for interaction are distributed across the actors in a setting\, and are continually being co-constituted. I’ll argue that this idea of capacities for interaction offers important lessons for the design of assistive technologies. In both Human-Computer Interaction and design\, people with vision impairments (and disabilities in general) are frequently viewed as lacking in some way and assistive technologies are approached as a means of replacing an absent ability or overcoming a perceived ‘deficiency’. In other words\, the emphasis is placed on a person’s relatively stable\, individual abilities (or lack on them). With the Hololens system\, TH and his family show that a more productive perspective might be to understand how technologies interweave with the ways capacities are collectively enacted. The emphasis shifts from mediating or replacing absences\, to providing the conditions for new capacities and for more to happen. \nBIO Alex is a sociologist at the Centre for Human Centred Interaction Design\, at City\, University of London. With a fascination for the entanglements between social life and machines\, his research ranges from empirical studies of technology in everyday life to speculative design interventions.
