SUMMARY:Identifying different comms styles + Masterclass // UX Book Passion Talk
DESCRIPTION:E-meet Trenton Moss and hear his story behind the book ‘Human Powered: Supercharge Your Digital Product Teams With Emotional Intelligence’ \nYou’ll have felt an instant connection with some colleagues when you first started working together. And with others\, you may still be struggling to work with them after some time. The thing is\, we’re all different… but those differences aren’t as varied as you might think. \nIn this masterclass\, Trenton will walk you through the 4 different communication styles. You’ll find out which is your most dominant one and therefore how you tend to communicate… and you’ll also learn which ones your colleagues use\, and how you should adapt your comms to them. \nYou have to take part in Trenton’s sessions to believe just how high-energy and interactive remote workshops can be. Expect lots of group work\, roleplays\, live demos\, interactive polls and group chat – all based on the challenges you face day-to-day. Strictly no lectures and no slides. \nZoom Link: \nUse this link to enter the webinar on the day: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMsduqoqTksH9H2XdR1U5Wc7aFC0nJ9Ykhe

SUMMARY:Introduction to Equity-Centered Community Design
DESCRIPTION:Oppressive\, inequitable\, and unequal systems are by design; therefore\, we can redesign them.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nOppressive\, inequitable\, and unequal systems are by design; therefore\, we can redesign them. Equity-Centered Community Design is a creative problem-solving framework developed by Creative Reaction Lab that supports the development of equity-centered approaches that will dismantle oppressive systems. Every person is a designer because we each have the power to affect outcomes with the decisions that we make daily in all arenas of our lives. If we are striving to redesign for justice\, it is essential that history\, healing\, power\, identities\, and narratives are consistently centered. \nIntended for those in the beginning stages of learning Equity-Centered Community Design\, this 2-hour live interactive webinar will introduce each piece of the ECCD framework + our Redesigners for Justice movement\, promoting a sustainable shift in mindset shift. Q&A will be used to support learning. By the end of this session\, learners will: \n\nHave reflected on their own basic understanding and practice of each concept through polling and large group discussions in the chatbox.\n\n\nHave a basic understanding of the ways in which they might practice Equity-Centered Community Design concepts.\n\n\nHave an initial set of questions they can use for self and team assessment to support the development of equity-centered approaches.\n\n\nBe able to identify several ways in which they are or can be Redesigners for Justice.\n\nNote: The session will be recorded and made available to all registrants along with the slide deck within 2 business days following the live session. \nRSVP: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/introduction-to-equity-centered-community-design-registration-168120828925

SUMMARY:UX Crunch - Evolving Healthcare Through Design
DESCRIPTION:As the worlds of technology and healthcare exponentially grow and continue to develop overlaps\, we’re constantly witnessing and conforming to new ways of living and different ways of looking after ourselves and those around us. Online doctor appointments and fitness tracking apps have become the new normal\, but it’s important to prioritise people feeling as though they’re getting the same standard of care that they would expect from in-person practices. Over the last year\, we’ve become increasingly reliant on digital health technologies to help us throughout the coronavirus pandemic. This has set a new precedent for continued growth and innovation in HealthTech spaces during the remainder of 2021 and the years to follow- the outcomes of this innovation will play a big part in helping the post-pandemic world recover whilst also modernising some of the cumbersome systems that are still being used in the healthcare sector. Join our speakers as they explore the future of healthcare and how they plan on designing technologies that will help us all feel more secure moving forward. Featuring: Shaon Sengupta\, Design Director\, Philips HealthTech Driving human-centred healthTech innovation In today’s complex and ever-changing world\, it’s impossible to innovate alone. Transforming the delivery of health and building a sustainable business in this challenging context calls for a different\, more human-centred approach to innovation. Cocreate focuses on people and is built around three core beliefs: 1. Start by involving customers & users\, so we can innovate with them rather than for them. 2. Bring together people from different disciplines to have broader knowledge and solve complex challenges. 3. Help all participants collaborate\, explore opportunities and chal \nTo attend: https://www.bigmarker.com/tech-circus-tv/UX-Crunch-Evolving-Healthcare-Through-Design

SUMMARY:Andrea Parker: Community Wellness Informatics: Designing Technology for Health Equity
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, there are serious and persistent disparities in health outcomes. For example\, socioeconomic status is predictive of mortality and disease\, with low-SES households disproportionately experiencing health challenges. This inequality is due in large part to the social determinants of health?social\, physical\, and economic conditions that make it more challenging to achieve wellness in low-SES communities. \nDisruptive innovations are sorely needed to reduce health disparities. Information and communication technologies (ICTs)\, with their growing ubiquity and ability to provide engaging\, informative\, and empowering experiences for people\, present exciting opportunities for health equity research. \nThis talk will overview a set of case studies demonstrating work the Wellness Technology Lab has done to design\, build\, and evaluate how novel interactive computing experiences can address issues of health equity. These case studies investigate how social\, mobile\, and civic technology can help low-SES communities to both cope with barriers to wellness and address these barriers directly. Using findings from this research\, I will articulate opportunities and challenges for community wellness informatics?research that explores how ICTs can empower collectives to collaboratively pursue health and wellness goals. \nBio: Andrea Grimes Parker is an Associate Professor in the School of Interactive Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). She is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. Dr. Parker holds a Ph.D. in Human-Centered Computing from Georgia Tech and a B.S. in Computer Science from Northeastern University. From 2018-2019\, she was a Northeastern University Institute of Health Equity and Social Justice Research Faculty Scholar. Dr. Parker is the founder and director of the Wellness Technology Research Lab at Georgia Tech. Her interdisciplinary research spans the domains of human-computer interaction (HCI) and public health\, as she examines how social and interactive computing systems can be designed to address health disparities. \nDr. Parker’s research has been funded through awards from the National Science Foundation (NSF)\, the National Institutes of Health\, the Aetna Foundation\, and Google. She served as co-chair for the 2020 Symposium of the Workgroup on Interactive Systems in Healthcare (WISH)\, and currently serves on the SIGCHI CARES Committee and the Georgia Maternal Health Research for Action Steering Committee. Dr. Parker has received several best paper nominations for her research on health equity. \nURL: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/community-wellness-informatics-designing-technology-for-health-equity-tickets-156605628651?aff=acm

SUMMARY:Interfaces that help us refine and communicate our intent to computers
DESCRIPTION:BostonCHI’s next meeting will be on Tue\, Feb 9 at 6:15 PM EST\, featuring Elena Glassman. \n  \n\n\n\nAbstract\nIt can be tough to communicate what we want a computer to do on our behalf\, regardless of the method: examples\, demonstrations\, code\, etc. It can be especially tough when\, half-way through specifying what we think we want\, we realize that we were wrong and now we know what we want the computer to do… Many existing methods for translating human intent into executable computer programs do not sufficiently support humans in refining their own intent and communicating it to the computer\, or reflecting the computer’s interpretation of that intent back to the human. In this talk\, I will describe new interfaces for a particular technology\, program synthesis\, specifically designed to improve these critical components of the human-machine interaction loop so that humans can more quickly reach their goal: a program that behaves the way they want it to. \nBio\nElena Glassman is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the Harvard Paulson School of Engineering & Applied Sciences and the Stanley A. SUMMARY:Jared Spool - The UX Leaders' Secret Guide to Innovative\, UX-Driven Product Roadmaps
DESCRIPTION:This is a joint event of BostonCHI\, GBC/ACM\, and IEEE/CS \nMost UX professionals feel that they’re at the mercy of their organization’s product roadmaps. They’re on the receiving end of decisions about what the team is building and when they’re building it. These decisions are often not informed by their products’ users’ true needs. Instead\, the decisions are driven by the stakeholders’ beliefs that they must match competitive offerings. The result is that UX teams are constrained to researching and designing in far too short a time period\, where the problem isn’t identified and the nature of the solution isn’t well understood. They subsequently struggle to deliver what they believe to be the best possible product or service\, feeling like they’ve busted their butts to only achieve mediocre results. \nIn this presentation\, Jared will share the secrets that successful UX leaders have employed to take control of their product roadmap. You’ll see what it takes to escape the misery of reactive UX practices by integrating key user research and design efforts directly into the roadmap planning process. You’ll discover how UX leaders can work closely with their partners in product management to increase their organization’s delivery of innovative products and services. \nThis event is free but registration is required. A recording will be available on our website within the week following the event. \n\nRSVP: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-ux-leaders-secret-guide-to-innovative-ux-driven-product-roadmaps-tickets-132838767329

SUMMARY:BostonCHI: Dominic DiFranzo - Designing for Empathy on Social Media
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT\nModern design goals for social media platforms have focused on growth in terms of increasing user population and engagement\, but are starting to show their growing pains with the widespread of hate speech\, cyberbullying\, and fake news. This design focus on growth at any cost is increasing the amount and reach of antisocial behavior online. In this talk\, I will share my research in human-computer interactions that explores practical design interventions that encourage users to better empathize with one another. In my efforts to better implement and test these design interventions\, I’ve developed new experimental tools and methods that create ecologically valid social media simulations\, allowing researchers to conduct large-scale online social media experiments in a fully curated and controlled social media environment. \nBIO\nDominic DiFranzo is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Lehigh University. His research in human-computer interaction translates established social science theories into design interventions that encourage social media users to stand up to cyberbullies\, fact check fake news stories\, and engage in other prosocial actions. In his effort to better implement and test these design interventions\, he has also developed new experimental tools and methods that create ecologically valid social media simulations\, giving researchers control of both the technical interface and social situations found on social media platforms. His research has been published in numerous conferences and journals\, including the ACM CHI Conference\, the ACM CSCW Conference\, the International World Wide Web Conference\, and the ACM Web Sci Conference. \nSCHEDULE\n6-6:30 pm: Networking via virtual whiteboard and zoom \n6:30pm: Presentation \n7:30pm: Q&A \nHOW THIS WORKS:\nWe will be using: \n\nA Zoom meeting for the event\nA Miro virtual whiteboard during the pre-talk networking\n\nLinks for both the Zoom meeting and the Miro whiteboard will be sent to registered attendees. \nRSVP: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/dominic-difranzo-designing-for-empathy-on-social-media-tickets-129258416403?aff=calendar
