DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In recent years\, femtech – ‘female technologies’ has received increased attention and venture capital funding\, with some celebrating this as a feminist approach to design. While commendable in opening spaces for other genders\, these efforts are tethered to the healthcare industry\, narrowing the scope and potential of inclusive design. This talk broadens these conceptions by drawing from user-research of women ‘gig’ workers in the Global South as they organize themselves to navigate tech platforms and engage with the various design innovations that mediate their work and life worlds. These research efforts are driven by FemLab\, a decolonial and co-design initiative that situate at the center the voices of the marginalized workers at the bottom of the global value chain in the design and building of digital storytelling campaigns for inclusive labor futures. The fact is that we need to disrupt binaries in our approach on laboring through and with platforms. Flexibility and formality\, individual and collective\, and standardization and localization are not diametrically opposite; instead\, can be complementary to pathways on inclusive work. We need to recognize the varied dynamics of systemic inequality\, shaped by race\, caste\, gender\, and religion\, among other intersections for equitable design interventions for dignified work. We should distribute our energies\, going beyond the design of tech to the everyday governance and redressal systems that keep these systems accountable\, responsible\, and just. Lastly\, let us attend to collectives and cooperatives as critical in shaping reform and instituting legitimate choice.

SUMMARY:Public Lecture Series: Critical Perspectives on Technology

DESCRIPTION:The Executive Committee (EC) of ACM Special Interest Group on Computer–Human Interaction (SIGCHI) organized a series of ten equity talks from March 2021 to August 2021. These were hour-long recorded virtual roundtable sessions\, for which we solicited participation from the SIGCHI community on concerns and questions relating to equity\, in a number of areas relevant to SIGCHI. Many concerns were listed\, some were repeated across topics\, and the EC followed due diligence when it came to presenting this information to the community. What comes next?

SUMMARY:Greenery Day
DESCRIPTION:The present observation of Greenery Day as a national holiday in Japan stems from the celebration of the birthday of the Emperor Shōwa on April 29 every year during the Shōwa era. In 1989\, following the ascension of the Emperor Akihito to the Chrysanthemum Throne\, the name of the holiday was changed from “Birthday of the Emperor” to “Greenery Day”. Officially\, as its name suggests\, it is a day to commune with nature and to be thankful for blessings. The day was renamed to “Greenery Day” to acknowledge the controversial wartime emperor’s love for plants without directly mentioning his name. However\, in practice it is seen as just another day that expands the Japanese Golden Week vacation. In 2007\, Greenery Day moved to May 4\, and April 29 was changed to Shōwa Day in accordance with a 2005 revision of the law pertaining to public holidays. DESCRIPTION:Come see Lifetime Practice Award winner\, Steven Pemberton\, present his contributions as a practitioner. \nAbstract: Imagine\, hypothetically\, that programmers are humans … despite all evidence to the contrary: * They work at night\, and sleep during the day; * They only need 2 hours of sleep; * They survive on a diet of pure caffeine and sugar; * Many actually enjoy using the vi editor. Also pretend\, just for a moment\, that their chief method of communicating with a computer was with programming languages. What should you do? Designing notations\, including programming languages\, is not a purely technical exercise\, especially since humans have to use them. Human-computer interaction metrics such as speed of use\, error avoidance\, and enjoyability can be applied just as well to notations as physical devices and computer programs.

SUMMARY:[CHI] Exploring Hybrid: A (hybrid) SIG to discuss hybrid conferences
DESCRIPTION:This is a SIGCHI Executive Committee organized event at the CHI 2022 conference. \nIn this special interest group (SIG)\, we follow up on previous conversations around hybrid models for conferences\, conducted in open sessions by the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI) Executive Committee (EC). The COVID-19 pandemic led to a sudden shift to virtual conferences; as we start to go back to in-person events\, it is important to reflect on the types of events we desire\, and design these accordingly. With this SIG\, we hope to share experiences from previous conferences (successful or not) and discuss potential solutions to pending issues. This SIG will be led by VP at Large Adriana S. Vivacqua\, with the participation of other EC members.
