SUMMARY:SIGCHI EC June Meeting
DESCRIPTION:For this ~45-minute meeting\, the agenda is as follows: \nLuigi De Russis\, Adjunct Chair for Community Support\, will present a proposal for “badges” for events supported by the SIGCHI Development Fund. Our goal with these badges is two-fold: (a) to provide a set of guidelines that events can consider in planning their events and making them accessible\, sustainable\, globally inclusive\, etc.; and (b) then for events to signal that these guidelines have been adopted for their target audiences. (10 mins) \nMatt Jones\, Vice-President for Chapters\, will go over the vision of the Chapters Committee that was set up earlier this year. (10 mins) \nNic Bidwell\, Adjunct Chair for Sustainability\, will lead a conversation on Conferences and the Environment. The SIGCHI Sustainability Committee plans to consider different ways to offset the environmental impact of our conferences. To this end\, we will consider the options of the ACM Carbon Offset Program and local/global alternatives for different ecological impacts\, and funding strategies to support these. (10 mins) \nNeha Kumar\, President\, will lead a short discussion about the ACM SIGCHI TechNews newsletter. This is a member benefit for SIGCHI Members—should we keep it\, make changes to it\, discard it altogether? (5 mins) \nPejman Mirza-Babaei\, Cale Passmore\, Luigi De Russis\, and Adriana Vivacqua will quickly go over the current calls we have going for volunteering on the Publications\, Equity\, Development Fund\, Futuring Committees\, and the Hybrid Working Group. (5 mins) \nWe will end with Q&A\, per usual. (5 mins) \n*** \nThe EC conducts public meetings on a monthly basis. These take place virtually on Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Shavuot\, or Shavuos in some Ashkenazi usage\, commonly known in English as the Feast of Weeks\, is a Jewish holiday that occurs on the sixth day of the Hebrew month of Sivan. In the Bible\, Shavuot marked the wheat harvest in the Land of Israel. In addition\, Orthodox rabbinic traditions teach that the date also marks the revelation of the Oral Torah to Moses at Mount Sinai\, which\, according to the tradition of Orthodox Judaism\, occurred at this date in 1314 BCE. DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In recent years\, femtech – ‘female technologies’ has received increased attention and venture capital funding\, with some celebrating this as a feminist approach to design. While commendable in opening spaces for other genders\, these efforts are tethered to the healthcare industry\, narrowing the scope and potential of inclusive design. This talk broadens these conceptions by drawing from user-research of women ‘gig’ workers in the Global South as they organize themselves to navigate tech platforms and engage with the various design innovations that mediate their work and life worlds. These research efforts are driven by FemLab\, a decolonial and co-design initiative that situate at the center the voices of the marginalized workers at the bottom of the global value chain in the design and building of digital storytelling campaigns for inclusive labor futures. The fact is that we need to disrupt binaries in our approach on laboring through and with platforms. Flexibility and formality\, individual and collective\, and standardization and localization are not diametrically opposite; instead\, can be complementary to pathways on inclusive work. We need to recognize the varied dynamics of systemic inequality\, shaped by race\, caste\, gender\, and religion\, among other intersections for equitable design interventions for dignified work. We should distribute our energies\, going beyond the design of tech to the everyday governance and redressal systems that keep these systems accountable\, responsible\, and just. Lastly\, let us attend to collectives and cooperatives as critical in shaping reform and instituting legitimate choice.
