On this day\, the Chinese believe that the Moon is at its brightest and fullest size\, coinciding with harvest time in the middle of Autumn. SUMMARY:Onam
DESCRIPTION:Onam is an annual Hindu harvest festival celebrated in the Indian state of Kerala. A major annual event for Keralites\, it is the official festival of the state and includes a spectrum of cultural events. Drawing from Hindu legends\, Onam commemorates King Mahabali and Vamana. Within the textual tradition\, Mahabali is noted to be an Asura\, who found liberation at the feet of Vishnu through charity and religious rectitude. However\, there are other interpretations of the same myth-cycle. In the state-sanctioned celebrations\, Mahabali is portrayed as a cultural hero: a just and benevolent ruler\, he chose to even give up his rule/life for protecting his subjects\, and was allowed by Vamana to return once a year. The festival probably has ancient origins and it became intricately linked with Hindu legends at some later date. SUMMARY:SIGCHI EC August Meeting
DESCRIPTION:For this ~45-minute meeting (see Zoom link below)\, the agenda is as follows: \nWe will begin with a quick overview\, before summarizing updates from our July 2.5-day (hybrid) workshop\, where the EC discussed a number of areas and action items for the near/not-so-near future of SIGCHI. (~10 mins) \nAll attending EC members will share an update with the community on what they have achieved in the year thus far\, as well as their plans for next year and until the conclusion of our term (2024). (~30 mins) \nWe will end with Q&A\, per usual. (~5 mins) \n*** \nThe EC conducts public meetings on a monthly basis. These take place virtually on Zoom. We welcome participation from members\, within time constraints. We will be providing a video recording and meeting notes for all meetings on our website. \nPlease let us know (via email: sigchi-access@acm.org) if you have specific accessibility requests\, and our Accessibility Committee will do their best to accommodate them. We also aim to provide SLI at all meetings.

SUMMARY:Public Lecture Series: Critical Perspectives on Technology

SUMMARY:Assumption of Mary
DESCRIPTION:The Assumption of Mary is one of the four Marian dogmas of the Catholic Church. The dogma declares a doctrinal belief in the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary to heaven at the end of her life on earth. Pope Pius XII defined the dogma of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in 1950 in his apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus as follows: We proclaim and define it to be a dogma revealed by God that the immaculate Mother of God\, Mary ever virgin\, when the course of her earthly life was finished\, was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven. The declaration was built upon the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary in 1854\, which declared that Mary was conceived free from original sin\, and both have their foundation in the concept of Mary as the Mother of God. DESCRIPTION:Tisha B’Av is an annual fast day in Judaism\, on which a number of disasters in Jewish history occurred\, primarily the destruction of both Solomon’s Temple by the Neo-Babylonian Empire and the Second Temple by the Roman Empire in Jerusalem. Tisha B’Av marks the end of the three weeks between dire straits and is regarded as the saddest day in the Jewish calendar\, and it is thus believed to be a day which is destined for tragedy. Tisha B’Av falls in July or August in the Gregorian calendar. The observance of the day includes five prohibitions\, most notable of which is a 25-hour fast.
