SUMMARY:[CHI] Closing Plenary
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In recent years\, femtech – ‘female technologies’ has received increased attention and venture capital funding\, with some celebrating this as a feminist approach to design. While commendable in opening spaces for other genders\, these efforts are tethered to the healthcare industry\, narrowing the scope and potential of inclusive design. This talk broadens these conceptions by drawing from user-research of women ‘gig’ workers in the Global South as they organize themselves to navigate tech platforms and engage with the various design innovations that mediate their work and life worlds. These research efforts are driven by FemLab\, a decolonial and co-design initiative that situate at the center the voices of the marginalized workers at the bottom of the global value chain in the design and building of digital storytelling campaigns for inclusive labor futures. The fact is that we need to disrupt binaries in our approach on laboring through and with platforms. Flexibility and formality\, individual and collective\, and standardization and localization are not diametrically opposite; instead\, can be complementary to pathways on inclusive work. We need to recognize the varied dynamics of systemic inequality\, shaped by race\, caste\, gender\, and religion\, among other intersections for equitable design interventions for dignified work. We should distribute our energies\, going beyond the design of tech to the everyday governance and redressal systems that keep these systems accountable\, responsible\, and just. Lastly\, let us attend to collectives and cooperatives as critical in shaping reform and instituting legitimate choice.

DESCRIPTION:The present observation of Greenery Day as a national holiday in Japan stems from the celebration of the birthday of the Emperor Shōwa on April 29 every year during the Shōwa era. In 1989\, following the ascension of the Emperor Akihito to the Chrysanthemum Throne\, the name of the holiday was changed from “Birthday of the Emperor” to “Greenery Day”. Officially\, as its name suggests\, it is a day to commune with nature and to be thankful for blessings. The day was renamed to “Greenery Day” to acknowledge the controversial wartime emperor’s love for plants without directly mentioning his name. However\, in practice it is seen as just another day that expands the Japanese Golden Week vacation. In 2007\, Greenery Day moved to May 4\, and April 29 was changed to Shōwa Day in accordance with a 2005 revision of the law pertaining to public holidays. Also pretend\, just for a moment\, that their chief method of communicating with a computer was with programming languages. What should you do? Designing notations\, including programming languages\, is not a purely technical exercise\, especially since humans have to use them. Human-computer interaction metrics such as speed of use\, error avoidance\, and enjoyability can be applied just as well to notations as physical devices and computer programs.

SUMMARY:[CHI] SIGCHI Awards: Lifetime Research Award
DESCRIPTION:Come see Lifetime Research Award winner\, Yvonne Rogers\, present her life’s work. \nAbstract: I have always been fascinated with technology. When I was very young\, back in the 70s\, I came across Pong – an early computer game that involved sliding a digital bat up and down a screen to hit a digital disc. I loved playing it side-by-side with a friend\, laughing\, shouting\, whooping and sharing tactics together. Since then\, I have never looked back\, always challenging myself to work out how to design all manner of technology to excite and provoke us; augmenting how we learn\, think and talk. My first foray into designing new interfaces was to support learning where we developed novel multimedia interfaces to encourage young children to understand the world around them through interacting with abstractions and formalisms. We designed them to be playful and to encourage children to experiment with counterfactuals [6]. For this\, we designed dynamically-linked visualisations that bridged the gap between abstractions of an ecosystem\, such as food web diagrams\, and the corresponding ‘real world’\, through a playful\, interactive simulation of animals and plants in a pond. Changes in one were matched by changes in the other. Children could manipulate aspects of the food web to see what would happen if that was the case – for instance\, seeing an animation of weeds eating a perch. We were able to demonstrate how this kind of interactive digital simulation enabled children to understand how to use formalisms as computational aids to reason about a complex system while having lots of fun at the same time. It was the start of many exciting adventures.

DESCRIPTION:Shōwa Day is a Japanese annual holiday held on April 29. It honors the birthday of Emperor Shōwa\, the reigning emperor from 1926 to 1989. DESCRIPTION:SIGCHI is turning 40 this year! This milestone gives us an opportunity to not only celebrate and reflect on how far HCI has come as a field\, but also imagine its future trajectories. In this open session\, we will take stock of SIGCHI’s past and present and envision how it might evolve over the next few decades along the dimensions the community cares about most\, such as infrastructures for mentorship\, sustainability\, accessibility\, among others. This will be a precursor to the “SIGCHI Turns 40” SIG at CHI 2022\, where we will continue to develop aspirations and\, importantly\, concrete avenues towards a thriving SIGCHI community. To sustain these brainstorming efforts\, this open session and the SIG to follow will inform the workings of the new Futuring SIGCHI committee\, through which early career professionals can lead projects that help realize community visions for SIGCHI—look out for an open call in coming weeks and get involved! \nPlease join this open session via Zoom. \nLet us know (via email: sigchi-access@acm.org) if you have any accessibility requests (e.g.\, CART\, SLI)\, and we will do our best to accommodate them.
