SUMMARY:Shavuot
DESCRIPTION:Shavuot\, or Shavuos in some Ashkenazi usage\, commonly known in English as the Feast of Weeks\, is a Jewish holiday that occurs on the sixth day of the Hebrew month of Sivan. In the Bible\, Shavuot marked the wheat harvest in the Land of Israel. In addition\, Orthodox rabbinic traditions teach that the date also marks the revelation of the Oral Torah to Moses at Mount Sinai\, which\, according to the tradition of Orthodox Judaism\, occurred at this date in 1314 BCE. The word Shavuot means “weeks”\, and it marks the conclusion of the Counting of the Omer. Its date is directly linked to that of Passover; the Torah mandates the seven-week Counting of the Omer\, beginning on the second day of Passover\, to be immediately followed by Shavuot. This counting of days and weeks is understood to express anticipation and desire for the giving of the Torah. Source: Duckduckgo API

SUMMARY:Tisha B'Av
DESCRIPTION:Tisha B’Av is an annual fast day in Judaism\, on which a number of disasters in Jewish history occurred\, primarily the destruction of both Solomon’s Temple by the Neo-Babylonian Empire and the Second Temple by the Roman Empire in Jerusalem. Tisha B’Av marks the end of the three weeks between dire straits and is regarded as the saddest day in the Jewish calendar\, and it is thus believed to be a day which is destined for tragedy. Tisha B’Av falls in July or August in the Gregorian calendar. The observance of the day includes five prohibitions\, most notable of which is a 25-hour fast. The Book of Lamentations\, which mourns the destruction of Jerusalem is read in the synagogue\, followed by the recitation of kinnot\, liturgical dirges that lament the loss of the Temples and Jerusalem. SUMMARY:Assumption of Mary
DESCRIPTION:The Assumption of Mary is one of the four Marian dogmas of the Catholic Church. The dogma declares a doctrinal belief in the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary to heaven at the end of her life on earth. Pope Pius XII defined the dogma of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in 1950 in his apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus as follows: We proclaim and define it to be a dogma revealed by God that the immaculate Mother of God\, Mary ever virgin\, when the course of her earthly life was finished\, was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven. The declaration was built upon the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary in 1854\, which declared that Mary was conceived free from original sin\, and both have their foundation in the concept of Mary as the Mother of God. It leaves open the question of whether Mary died or whether she was raised to eternal life without bodily death. Source: Duckduckgo API

SUMMARY:Onam
DESCRIPTION:Onam is an annual Hindu harvest festival celebrated in the Indian state of Kerala. A major annual event for Keralites\, it is the official festival of the state and includes a spectrum of cultural events. Drawing from Hindu legends\, Onam commemorates King Mahabali and Vamana. Within the textual tradition\, Mahabali is noted to be an Asura\, who found liberation at the feet of Vishnu through charity and religious rectitude. However\, there are other interpretations of the same myth-cycle. In the state-sanctioned celebrations\, Mahabali is portrayed as a cultural hero: a just and benevolent ruler\, he chose to even give up his rule/life for protecting his subjects\, and was allowed by Vamana to return once a year. The festival probably has ancient origins and it became intricately linked with Hindu legends at some later date. The earliest known reference is found in Maturaikkāñci – a Sangam poem – which mentions Onam being celebrated in Madurai temples. Source: Duckduckgo API

SUMMARY:Rosh Hashana
DESCRIPTION:Rosh HaShanah\, is the Jewish New Year. The biblical name for this holiday is Yom Teruah\, literally “day of shouting or blasting.” It is the first of the Jewish High Holy Days\, as specified by Leviticus 23:23–25\, that occur in the late summer/early autumn of the Northern Hemisphere. SUMMARY:Hoshana Rabbah
DESCRIPTION:Hoshana Rabbah is the seventh day of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot\, the 21st day of the month of Tishrei. This day is marked by a special synagogue service\, the Hoshana Rabbah\, in which seven circuits are made by the worshippers with their lulav and etrog\, while the congregation recites Hoshanot. It is customary for the scrolls of the Torah to be removed from the ark during this procession. In a few communities a shofar is sounded after each circuit. Source: Duckduckgo API

SUMMARY:Shemini Atzeret
DESCRIPTION:Shemini Atzeret is a Jewish holiday. It is celebrated on the 22nd day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei in the Land of Israel\, and on the 22nd and 23rd outside the Land\, usually coinciding with late September or early October. It directly follows the Jewish festival of Sukkot which is celebrated for seven days\, and thus Shemini Atzeret is literally the eighth day. It is a separate—yet connected—holy day devoted to the spiritual aspects of the festival of Sukkot. Part of its duality as a holy day is that it is simultaneously considered to be both connected to Sukkot and also a separate festival in its own right. Outside the Land of Israel\, this is further complicated by the additional day added to all Biblical holidays except Yom Kippur. The first day of Shemini Atzeret therefore coincides with the eighth day of Sukkot outside the Land of Israel\, leading to sometimes involved analysis as to which practices of each holiday are to apply. SUMMARY:Simchat Torah
DESCRIPTION:Simchat Torah or Simhat Torah is a Jewish holiday that celebrates and marks the conclusion of the annual cycle of public Torah readings\, and the beginning of a new cycle. Simchat Torah is a component of the Biblical Jewish holiday of Shemini Atzeret\, which follows immediately after the festival of Sukkot in the month of Tishrei. The main celebrations of Simchat Torah take place in the synagogue during evening and morning services. In Orthodox as well as many Conservative congregations\, this is the only time of year on which the Torah scrolls are taken out of the ark and read at night. In the morning\, the last parashah of Deuteronomy and the first parashah of Genesis are read in the synagogue. On each occasion\, when the ark is opened\, the worshippers leave their seats to dance and sing with the Torah scrolls in a joyous celebration that can last for several hours. The morning service is also uniquely characterized by the calling up of each member of the congregation for an aliyah. Source: Duckduckgo API
